A Conversation with Maria Teresa Kumar

In my wide-ranging interview with Maria Teresa Kumar, we talked about a practice that has been going on for years, but which, under the Trump Administration’s zero tolerance and family separation policies, has become more and more commonplace.

Mrs. Molin

This is about my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Molin. I try to share this every National Teachers Day but I am choosing to post today on the last day of Teacher Appreciation Week because, let’s be honest, teachers like Mrs. Molin should be thanked all week! Heck, all month! When I first started running for the Senate back in 2007, I got a letter from my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Molin. It started this way: Dear Mr. Franken, If you’re the Alan Franken who I taught in the fourth grade at Cedar Manor, then it doesn’t surprise me that you are … Read More…

The Final Round

CHAIRMAN GRAHAM: Mr. Attorney General, we are going to wrap up here with a quick lightening-round of very short follow-up questions. You, sir, have been extremely forthcoming and direct and we so appreciate that. So, I guess no one on our side is going to take any more time, because you have addressed our most important question – when do the new investigations of Hillary and on the FBI spying on the President begin? And we liked the answers – which is, of course, that they’ve already started under Mr. Whitaker. And we thank him for his service. Now, to my Democratic colleagues. Just make … Read More…

We have an election coming up in a year-and-a-half, and even starting impeachment hearings carries potentially disastrous political risks. On the other hand, maybe not starting impeachment hearings carries even more disastrous risks. Suppose Democrats look weak—who, us?—and Trump is re-elected. What would a second Trump term look like if … Read More…

Remembering Dick Lugar

On my first day in the Senate, I made a point of finding Indiana senator Richard Lugar on the Senate floor and telling him that he was a hero of mine. Dick, a moderate conservative, who served Indiana for six terms in the Senate, died yesterday at age 87, leaving a distinguished legacy of public service for Indiana, the United States, and the world.

Thank you

Yesterday, I posted to ask folks to donate books and money to fill the bookshelves of a new Indian school in northern MN. I admit that I was a little nervous sending out the request. I’m reentering the public square and didn’t quite know what the reaction would be. The response has been terrific, and I am so grateful to everyone who has donated thus far. Laurie Villwock, the librarian at the Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig school at the Leech Lake Reservation was blown away by everyone’s generosity. All the books she asked for were contributed and we have raised over $50,000 in the … Read More…
